Advocacy for Veterans:

Here are some activities that Ben Findley has been actively involved with to advocate for Veterans.

  • Florida Veterans Foundation (FVF) Board, Tallahassee, Florida– He has been working to help our Florida Veterans through his three-year term of service on the Florida Veterans Foundation Board. His role is to support the not-for-profit Foundation through strategic & operational vision & to provide oversight to the Board & regional directors for Veterans advocacy. It gives support to Veterans for such things as suicide prevention, emergency financial crises, help with Veterans medical & other benefits, etc. He has helped set the tone for our Veterans with emergency financial needs by recently donating $7,050. cash to FVF, plus his volunteer time & work on projects & events. He has helped with the FVF Gadsden Flag license plate project by contacting many veterans & others to purchase the plate with some proceeds going to our FVF. He wrote a related Gadsden Flag history article to include a promotional message to help license plate sales, with his many Veterans as Readers & Followers on many websites. I estimate about 6,000 Followers on one large website where he writes articles & offers support to Veterans and about 1,000 Followers on another website. A recent documented reader count for just one website where he writes articles (about 500 articles) is 5,079 Readers, with an estimated 10% purchasing a plate from his Gadsden article. He has also attended & promoted several meetings & was a speaker at one event to support Veterans, e.g Eglin AFB, FL Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Celebration & Pensacola, NAS, FL Vietnam Veterans Event. He talked with several Veterans at these events & distributed FVF literature and Veterans Benefits pamphlets to help Veterans. He also donated a copy of one of his books to the FVF General Yeager Golf Tournament & helped promote it. He spent many hours and recently completed the
Psych Armor Institute’s 11 courses for Veterans support, including earning certification for the Fire Watch for Military & Veterans Suicide Prevention in October. Some courses he completed include Firearms & Suicide in the Military Community, Treating Grief in the Veteran Population, and How to Use the Crisis Response Plan to Support Veterans.
  • Veterans Memorial Park Foundation Board (VMPFB), Pensacola, Florida- He has been working to support Veterans through his participation in the VMPFB which strives to celebrate the lives of America’s fallen warfighters & all Veterans. The Veterans Park has about 118,000 annual visitors to its 13 monuments, & about 750 bricks have been sold to honor living & deceased Veterans. He has donated $375. for two bricks to honor two Veterans in the Walk of Honor, as well as donating $1,000. in cash to benefit Veterans. We both volunteered to read the names of Vietnam War deceased during our major Veterans Day event. He has been frequently and actively contacting Flo1ida businesses and others to get major donations to support our Veterans Park.
  • Disabled Veterans of America (DAV) Volunteer– He has been a DAV volunteer for two years to help and support transitioning active duty, Guard, & Reserve members, Veterans, & their spouses adapt to civilian life. He enjoys counseling & helping them create a purposeful life thru employment, education, and service. He has counsel eel disabled Veterans about benefits claims processing & provided employment contacts thru his college Human Resources position & his community involvement. I am pleased to say some of his disabled Veteran friends got employed & some decided to attend college. Also, he donated $7,000. in cash to help disabled Veterans in need of emergency medical and financial assistance.
  • Florida College Student Counseling and Recruitment– Because of his college administrative & student recruitment background in Florida, he has counseled many Veteran students to maximize their credits received when transferring credits from military training & service. He counseled them regularly & helped them with their academic education and career paths, receiving an Outstanding Counselor award. He served on Scholarship Committees and helped select/award college scholarships to deserving Veterans and others.
  • USAF Academy position as Deputy Commander for AL & N.FL Liaison Officers– This job involved interviewing candidates for scholarships; some were designated for Veterans with previous service. He interviewed and recommended to Congressional members the best candidates, including one Veteran he recommended for an Academy appointment who was tendered a (approximate) $400,000. appointment.

Here are Civic activities that Ben Findley has been actively involved with in his community:

  • Pensacola Area Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee- He served on this important committee for several years. The mission was to develop military-friendly initiatives to enhance our area’s military value and to improve the quality of life for Veterans and the military, e.g. housing and medical care. He spent a lot of time strongly advocating for Veterans, helped some disabled Veterans, and he gave two Naval Air Station Pensacola, Schools Command keynote graduation addresses.
  • Florida Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR)- For 7 years, he served on the ESGR public affairs, military outreach, and ombudsman committees. He was certified as an Ombudsman and counseled and taught seminars for military Reserve Component members (including Veterans) on employment rights, etc. He visited 8 Pensacola, FL area employers and presented information about the USER.RA federal law that establishes the rights and responsibilities for Reserve and Guard members, Veterans, and their civilian employers. He conducted a USERRA seminar at Pensacola Junior College for about 100 Veterans and service members. The seminar affects employment, reemployment, and employment benefits and retention for employees who have served in the uniformed services.
  • Foundation for Excellence in Education, Escambia County Schools- He served as the elected Chairman of the Board for our district-wide educational Foundation for all county public schools, with all funds raised going directly to the Escambia County Schools. Donations enhance Grants for Program Excellence, Golden Apple Awards for Teachers of the Year, Academic and MIRA Awards for outstanding students, and scholarships. His Board had a record year for funds raised and he was awarded the Golden Apple for leading the Board to excellent results. He enjoyed presenting awards to outstanding teachers and students for all county schools. The Air Force also awarded him the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal for his community volunteer work, which included this Foundation.
  • Sons of the American Revolution {SAR), Pensacola, FL- It is his honor to be associated with the SAR, a patriotic lineage organization where its members and Veterans have answered our country’s call in every major American conflict since the battle of Lexington and Concord in 1975, continuing to Operation Desert Storm, Bosnia, Afghanistan, and Iraq. This fine organization gives him the opportunity to be involved in his local community and he has shared stories of his Veteran American Revolution ancestor with local groups. Through the SAR, CAR, and other organizations, he has promoted our Veterans, patriotic core values and our Constitution, educated our youth about our American ideals and sacrifices of our Veterans.
  • Escambia County, FL Sheriff’s Law Enforcement Academy for Civilians- It was an enriching experience for him to graduate from the 8-week Sheriff’s Academy. As a civilian, he learned a lot about law enforcement and was given an opportunity to experience a simulated Shoot-No Shoot realistic deadly-force encounter. He analyzed and gave feedback to community students who also experienced an encounter. The two-way communication, feedbacks, and interactions really helped him be a part of our community and identify with a lot of Veterans and others to realistica11y understand our community’s crime status.
  • Pensacola Police Department’s Law Enforcement Academy for Civilians- Graduating from this 7-week course was also a very enriching experience for Ben and about 7 5% of attendees were Veterans. He shared a lot of common experiences and values with them. The two-way communication, feedbacks, and interactions helped him be a part of our community and identify with a lot of Veterans. Presentations by officers from the areas of drug enforcement, criminal investigations, traffic enforcement, crime scene, domestic violence, K-9s and animal control, firearms, and use of force were very interesting. One of the police officers visited our home for a friendly sharing of Academy topics and Ben gave a short presentation about his related areas of interest and used the opportunity to support Veterans.
  • Rotary International and Kiwanis International Civic Organizations- He was elected President of the local Rotary International Chapter and President of the local Kiwanis International Chapter. With both organizations, he was actively involved in community programs to raise money that benefited Veterans and others, e.g. Community Education Program, education support, advancing goodwill and community involvement.
